Writing Through Grief

How Creativity Helped Me Cope

Losing my son at 32 years old was an experience that shattered my world. Grief, in its rawest form, became my constant companion, filling every corner of my life with questions, pain, and longing. But amid the darkness, I turned to something I knew could help me make sense of it all: writing.

As I began crafting my book about my son’s afterlife journey, I didn’t set out to heal. At first, it was simply a way to channel the overwhelming emotions that couldn’t be expressed elsewhere. Yet, page by page, word by word, writing became my lifeline—a way to connect with him, process my sorrow, and rediscover meaning in a world without his physical presence.

Creativity as a Lifeline

Writing his story allowed me to do something extraordinary amid my grief: keep his memory alive in a tangible and enduring way. Through the narrative, I could envision him not as lost but as continuing his journey in realms unseen. This creative process became:

  • A connection across dimensions: Writing allowed me to imagine and explore his presence beyond this life, as though we were conversing through the veil.

  • An outlet for my emotions: Instead of bottling my grief, I poured it into the pages, transforming it into something meaningful.

  • A way to process the unthinkable: Crafting his story was my way of confronting the enormity of his absence while also finding glimpses of hope in what lay beyond.

The Transformative Power of Creative Expression

Grief can make us feel untethered, as if the ground beneath us has shifted irreparably. Writing my son’s story helped me find my footing again. It reminded me that while I couldn’t change what had happened, I could still shape how I carried it forward.

  • Growth through storytelling: Writing allowed me to view my grief as a chapter in a larger narrative. In this journey, pain was not erased but became part of a broader story of resilience, understanding, and transformation.

  • Healing through purpose: Knowing that this story could touch others, perhaps offering comfort or understanding, gave me a renewed sense of purpose.

  • Transformation through creativity: What began as an act of survival turned into a profound journey of healing and spiritual connection.

How Creativity Helps Us Navigate Grief

Art can transform pain into something meaningful through writing, painting, music, or another creative outlet. It allows us to take the raw, jagged edges of our grief and shape them into something that reflects not just our loss but also our love.

  • Writing gives voice to the unspeakable. It allowed me to articulate feelings I couldn’t otherwise express. Creativity provides a safe space to explore emotions that might feel too heavy to share aloud.

  • It honors memory. Every word I wrote was a tribute to my son—his life, his spirit, and the bond we will always share. Creativity can keep loved ones close in deeply personal and sacred ways.

  • It reminds us of life’s continuity: Writing about his afterlife journey helped me see that endings are beginnings and that love transcends even the world’s boundaries.

A Call to Embrace Your Creativity

If you’re navigating grief or seeking a way to reconnect with yourself, I encourage you to explore creativity as a tool for healing. Write a letter to someone you’ve lost, paint your emotions onto a canvas, or create a ritual that feels uniquely yours. Creating is not about perfection—it's about showing up for yourself and letting your soul speak.

For me, writing my son’s story became more than a way to grieve—it became a way to honor him, to heal, and to find light in the darkest of places. Creativity doesn’t erase the pain but offers a way to carry it, transform it, and find moments of beauty amid the sorrow.

Grief may break us, but we can begin to rebuild through creativity—not as we were before, but as something stronger, more compassionate, and deeply connected to the love that endures.

The Joy of Writing: How I Found My Creative Passion

For years, I searched for my creative passion, trying to uncover that one pursuit that would bring me pleasure and joy. I dabbled in business, inspired by Andy Warhol’s belief that “Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art.” I explored photography and painting, both offering satisfaction but falling short of igniting a fire within me. Then, in 2017, I began writing my first novel, A Cobbler’s Tale, and something shifted. At first, I wasn’t sure if this path was for me. Writing felt daunting, like a distant mountain I wasn’t sure I could climb.

But then came Annie, my editor. She saw something in my raw drafts that I hadn’t yet recognized. She nurtured my ideas, refined my words, and taught me the craft of storytelling. Most importantly, she told me I was a good writer. That affirmation unlocked something inside me, and from that moment forward, I embraced writing with abandon. With fourteen books behind me, I can confidently say that storytelling is my creative expression and brings me boundless joy.

Writing has become the portal to my passion, a sacred space where the boundaries between my inner self and the world blur. Through writing, I connect with my thoughts and emotions, the greater currents of life, and the unseen forces that guide us all. Each word I craft feels like a thread in the intricate tapestry of existence, linking my experiences to the universal human story. This joy has deepened my understanding of creativity’s transformative power and why it is so essential for each of us to find our unique outlet—a way to give voice to the soul’s quiet yearning and uncover the truths that lie within.

For some, this connection may emerge through art, music, dance, gardening, hiking, yoga, or writing. For others, it may unfold in the work they perform daily. The real question is, why shouldn’t our work—our contribution to the world—be an extension of who we are? Why shouldn’t it be a creative expression that fulfills and uplifts us? Too often, we allow societal expectations, the demands of others, or the weight of convention to suppress our rightful path to joy. Yet, creativity is not a luxury; it is a necessity. It is the soul’s way of breathing, of finding freedom in a world that often imposes limitations.

When we embrace our creative nature—whether in the art we produce, the ideas we shape, or the passions we pursue—we liberate a part of ourselves that yearns to be seen and valued. This is not just about creating something beautiful; it’s about reclaiming the joy and purpose of living authentically. It is about daring to see our daily lives, our work, and our interactions as opportunities to create, inspire, and find meaning. Creativity is the spark that ignites transformation, not just for ourselves but for the world around us. The choice to follow that spark lies within each of us—it is our birthright, our responsibility, and our greatest gift.

For me, the joy of writing is more than the act of putting words on a page; it is an ongoing dialogue with the soul, an invitation to uncover and share truths that might otherwise remain hidden. Writing has taught me that creativity is not reserved for a chosen few but is a universal force waiting to be awakened within each of us. When we find that portal to our passion—whether through art, work, or play—we honor our most authentic selves.

Reflecting on my journey, writing has transformed my life by connecting me to the shared human experience—a timeless narrative of resilience, hope, and inspiration. My wish is that my story encourages you to seek out and embrace your creative spark, to find the courage to explore, and to discover the profound joy that arises when you align your life with your passions. In doing so, you don't just transform your world; you inspire others to do the same. Creativity is a light we carry, a gift we give, and a legacy we leave behind. Let it guide you toward the fulfillment of your deepest purpose.
